Maple Sugaring
If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, check out this unique event (high chances of rain on Saturday, but Sunday looks all clear with a high of 60º😎).
The Tippecanoe County Historical Association, in partnership with Warren Piece Co, will be hosting their annual Maple Sugaring event on March 7 and 8 from 10 AM to 4 PM at Fort Ouiatenon.
The free, two-day event will feature homemade pancakes, syrup rendering, historical reenactments, educational stations, and raffles. Good chance to get the family out of the house, and also grab some pancakes.

The Lafayette Kid Who Became Olympic History’s Greatest Jumper
Ray Ewry grew up in Lafayette, lost his mother young, and contracted polio as a child. The doctors didn’t think he would ever walk again. But, one suggested leg exercises as a sort of last ditch effort. Ewry became obsessed with this. He would do standing jumps, every day, until his legs listened to him.
By the time he graduated from Purdue with an engineering degree, he was setting records. And, at the 1900 Paris Olympics, he won three gold medals in a single day. The French called him L'Homme Grenouille (The Human Frog).
He won three more golds in the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis. He followed that by winning three more golds in the 1908 Games in London. Eight individual gold medals. With zero losses. His record for individual gold medals stood for 100 years until Michael Phelps broke it in Beijing.
He's buried at Spring Vale Cemetery, a few miles from where he taught himself to walk. The stretch of US 231 along Purdue's campus bears his name.

It’s already time to be marking your calendars for Dinner Club #2. On Wednesday, March 18th (dinner starts at 6:30 pm) we do it all over again! If you’re new in town, work remotely, or just want to make some new friends, this is a great opportunity.

Childcare Center Approved for Former Hanna Community Center Site
Lafayette City Council voted 6-0 Monday night to rezone the former Hanna Community Center site on North 18th Street which will clear the way for a new affordable childcare facility operated by Right Steps.
The nonprofit plans to build a 2,800 sq ft center serving up to 182 children, with the potential for shift-based and overnight care options for working families.
Councilmember Brown abstained, saying he could not support erasing the last remaining connection to Black Lafayette's history at that site. He acknowledged the project's value but called the decision personally painful.
The facility is targeting an April 2027 opening.
