Here’s what’s in Friday’s edition:

Beyond Gallery & Gift Shop isn't your average gift shop. Tucked right here in Lafayette, it's part art gallery, part creative playground. You will find the place stocked with DIY craft kits, original art, prints, jewelry, stickers, cards that'll make you laugh, and gifts you won't find anywhere else.

Their products span local artists, small-batch makers from across the country, recognizable brands, and fair-trade pieces that make sure every creator gets a fair shake. They also host six gallery exhibitions a year (four of them open call, always free to display) so artists at every level get a shot at the wall. As one regular puts it, it's the shop in Lafayette most likely to make you smile.

This Saturday, June 20, downtown Lafayette basically turns into a food court with a great music. The TASTE of Tippecanoe runs 5 pm to 11 pm. This year is the 45th year and it is the big annual fundraiser for The Arts Federation.

The vendor list is long and local. You’ll find everything from Korean BBQ bowls to Hot Cheetos corn dogs to wine slushies. This is a great place to try new things and be a grazer.

With four stages for music, you’ll also get to graze the music scene.

John Purdue died on September 12, 1876 when he was 73. The cause was an apparent stroke. And this took place on the opening day of classes of Purdue University’s third academic year.

He spent part of his final day on the campus he had funded. On that day, Purdue’s nephew drove him to the grounds, where he walked the campus and inspected the foundation of University Hall. Later, he was then taken to his room at the Hygienic Institute, a hospital-like facility where he had been staying off and on. A few hours later, attendants found him dying.

John Purdue is often said to have requested burial on campus, however, records do not support it. Purdue left no will and no funeral instructions and per university historian John Norberg, the decision was made by university and city leaders after his death.

On the day of the funeral, most Lafayette businesses closed. More than 100 carriages followed the hearse across the Wabash to a service in front of University Hall, where President Emerson E. White delivered the address. This is the final resting place of John Purdue.
