Lafayette’s One and Only State Fair
Indiana held its second state fair in Lafayette from October 10 to 14, 1853. It was the only time the fair came here. According to Tippecanoe County physician and historian William M. Reser, writing in the Indiana Magazine of History in 1936, the Tippecanoe County Agricultural Society identified four qualifying sites, and organizers chose W. K. Rochester's land, bounded by a ravine on the south, Washington Street on the west, and Kossuth Street on the north.
Lafayette won the fair largely on its transportation: the Wabash River, the Wabash and Erie Canal, and two newly finished railroads. Reser reported the town's population swelled from 10,000 to 60,000, and that Masonic, Odd Fellows, and Temperance halls were opened to lodge visitors. Figures Reser drew from the state board's treasurer's report list 1,500 entries.
Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune gave the closing address, "What the Sister Arts Teach as to Farming," printed as a pamphlet that year. Greeley judged the fair "interesting," though he wished it was "magnificent."
Have you made it out to the fairgrounds yet this year?

The Downtown Condo
Ever wanted to live downtown? Here is a reply cool condo down on 3rd Street, close to all of the downtown happenings. The brick-walled living room and bedroom are probably two of the most unique rooms I’ve seen since starting to do this.
