The weekend is near.

How bout them Boilers last night? Nothing quite like stressing for a couple hours straight about a game😅

Where are you watching the game tomorrow night?

Kids Paint and Plant

Back to back weeks I find myself featuring Bennett’s in this section. Two awesome events! This one looks like a great opportunity to get the kids out of the house.

Spring is finally here, and if you've got kids who love getting messy, this one's for you. This Saturday from 2–3 PM, there's a kids' garden party where little ones can paint their own stepping stone, plant a pansy to take home, and pick up some basic gardening tips along the way. All supplies are included, just show up ready to get a little dirt under your fingernails. It's a great way to kick off the season and give kids something they made themselves to put out in the yard. Spots are limited, so don't sit on this one. Fair warning: wear clothes you don't care about.

Abel Fields: The Man Who Kept Lafayette On Time

Next time you’re downtown, look up at the Tippecanoe County Courthouse clock. Then think about the man who kept it running for over 25 years.

This man’s name was Abel Fields and he was born into slavery in Kentucky. He was one of twelve siblings torn apart when their enslaver died. After the Civil War, he followed his brother (John) to the city of Lafayette. By 1883, Abel purchased property at 915 Spencer Street on the city's north side. And it was there that he would build a grocery business which he'd operate for nearly four decades. In 1895, he took on a second role: official winder of the courthouse clock. He held both jobs simultaneously for decades and was known for almost never missing a winding.

Fields died in September 1928 at age 78, back in his home state of Kentucky. The Journal and Courier ran the story on the front page.

He was the only Black grocer in Lafayette at the time of his passing.

Farmers Market Dates Are Set

The Lafayette Farmers Market is coming back Saturday, May 2nd, and will run every Saturday through October 31st.

Molly Welch with Greater Lafayette Commerce presented the street closure request at Tuesday's Board of Public Works and Safety meeting. The market will keep the same expanded footprint it moved to last year (Fifth Street between Columbia and Ferry, with Main Street closed from 4th to 6th). Street closures run from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each market day.

Two holiday mini markets are also planned for November 21st and December 5th, with no parking on Fifth Street between Main and Columbia from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Board members noted the market has grown since expanding its layout. The request was approved unanimously.
